Spokane, Washington


Located in the State of Washington, Northwestern United States, Spokane is the largest city in Spokane County. It is located in Spokane River, Eastern Washington, 110 mile (180 km) south of Canadian Border and more or less 20 miles (32km) from Washington-Idaho border, 271 miles (436 km) east of Seattle. The city lies in a transition area between the desert-like Columbia Basin of central Washington and the forested mountains of north Idaho and northeast Washington. Mount Spokane is the highest peak in Spokane County with an elevation of 5,883 feet (1,793m). Meanwhile, Spokane River is the most prominent and famous body of water. Spokane’s highest elevation is 1843 feet (562 m) above sea level, found in the northeast side near the community of Hillyard and lowest elevation is 1608 feet (490 m), which is the northernmost point of the Spokane River.

Known as Spokane Falls, the city of Spokane was settled in 1871 and was officially incorporated as a city in 1881. The city's name Spoken is derived from a Native American name which means Children of the Sun. Although often mispronounced as Spo-CAIN, it is correctly pronounced as Spo-CAN. Lilac, the flowers that have flourished in Spokane during the early 20th century are very prominent so the official nickname is Lilac City. Gold and silver were also discovered in the late 1800s, it is considered to be one of the most productive mining zones in North America. Even though Spokane's economy can survive through its natural based resources, they also explored other industries including the high-tech and biotech fields.

Spokane is the second largest city in Washington and the third largest in the Pacific Northwest. As of 2008, they have a population of 203,319. The center of trade and fishing is the Spokane Falls. Humans, who first lived in Spokane some eight thousand years ago, are believed to be hunters that made their living in the area. The descendants of the original hunter-gatherers are called Spokane tribe, where the city derived its name.

Climate in Spokane is humid continental climate and is marked by variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Summers are often warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms and winters can be very cold with frequent snowfall and persistent snow cover. The seasonal temperature variance is typically 25-35°C (45-63°F). It somehow resembles the Mediterranean climate, warm, arid climate during summer months and cold, somewhat snowy and moist climate during winter. Since Fall comes in a rapid transition, Summer and Winter are the predominant seasons. July and August are usually warm while December and January are the coldest months.
